On Friday, the Charles County Department of Health said a skunk found in Port Tobacco tested positive for rabies on Aug. 21. The skunk was found near Plenty Highlands Place.
A bat that was found in Waldorf also tested positive for rabies, county officials said Friday. The bat was found in the area of Green Woods Lane. County officials are urging residents to avoid contact with unknown animals, as rabies is a disease that can spread through the saliva of a rabid animal and can enter the body through open wounds or through the eyes, nose or mouth.Domesticated animals like dogs and cats can also contract rabies by having contact with wild animals.Anyone who may have come into contact with a rabid animal is urged to call the County Health Department at 301-609-6768.
