Gordon Gemeny, co-founder and owner of Gemeny Winery and Vineyards in Brandywine, MD, has passed away. He and his late wife, Mary, were instrumental in pioneering the local wine industry and lobbying to allow farm wineries to operate in Prince George’s County.
Gordon Gemeny’s LegacyFarm History: Gemeny Farms is a 200-acre working family farm that has been in the Gemeny family since 1897.
Wine Trail Pioneer: Gordon and his wife planted their first vineyard around 2007, shifting part of their former tobacco farm to grapes to encourage a Southern Maryland Wine Trail.
Local Law Reform: Because local zoning laws originally did not permit wineries, Gordon lobbied and helped create the legislation that now allows wineries to exist in Prince George’s County, leading to the winery’s opening in 2016.
