The courthouse cupola reconstruction appears to be part of preserving the historic courthouse while longer-term courthouse planning continues. A ten-year timeline for a new courthouse is plausible for a major capital project because design, funding, approvals, and construction often take multiple budget cycles. A new Charles County courthouse has been discussed as a future capital need.
The latest Capital Improvement Program information shows Charles County has moved beyond a general idea and has completed a building programming study for a future New Charles County Circuit Court Building. The county has placed placeholder funding over an estimated 10-year period for design and construction. The study estimates approximately 216,600 square feet for the new courthouse. The exact location remains TBD.
A new courthouse opening is more realistically a 2030s.The current Circuit Court remains at 200 Charles Street, La Plata.
