Update about the tree in the 15700 blk of Westwood Rd., that was dying and marked but was left standing by Department of Public Works and Transportation after notifying PGC Office of Community Relations, 311 in July 2026.
On the way to work this morning in the 15700 block of Westwood Rd. the roadway was blocked by a fallen tree. It was n’t the same tree that was marked with a red X, that I reported to P.G. Public Works by 311 and received a response that the tree could not be scheduled to be removed until December of 2026, it was another tree about 50 ft away that fell. The large dying tree with missing bark is still standing. That response was unacceptable, but typical for the residence that lives in the rural section of District 9, in Brandywine – Brandywine MDcom area.
County Executive Aisha N. Braveboy spend very little money on infrastructure upkeep in this arae. The roads around #badenelementarymaryland, are in deplorable condition and needs to be repaved, especially on Baden Westwood Rd, Horsehead Rd. to the Charles County line and Bald Eagle School Rd. also other roads in the area. Croom Rd. Route (382), which is the responsibility of Maryland State Highway Administration, also needs to be repaved in sections. It was very fortunate that the tree falling, did not injure or killed anyone but other dangerous trees are still standing and needs to be removed.
Hopefully whomever wins District 9 Council Member seat, Tamara Davis Brown, or Jesse Peed, will be addressing these issues and our current elected officials, Senator Kevin M. Harris and Delegate Jeffrie Long Jr. or whomever wins office, we bring about a change.
A neighbor, Brian took out his chainsaw and while I, Sean S LaGrand, that was driving and encountered the tree down blocked roadway, assisted him.
This community should not have to maintain roads, that we pay taxes for to be maintained.
Previous Update: advised by SMECO there are no service lines close to hazardous tree so they will not be removing the tree and to notify Department of Public Works. I notified the Department of Public Works and Transportation for Prince George’s County, in the 15700 blk of Westwood Rd., that a large tree marked by them for removal because it is dying and a safety hazard still haven’t been removed. It was marked back in March of 2026, when another very large tree fell over on Westwood Rd, that was removed by a local citizen. That tree and tree marked for removal, if they were to fall on a vehicle it will probably be fatal but the Prince George’s County has an estimated completion date of December 2027, for the tree still standing to be removed, which is unacceptable.

Westwood Rd is completely blocked by a large tree, lucky the rotten tree didn’t fall on a vehicle.Department of Public Works and Transportation was notified prior but stated the tree was on private property. But that was an error. In Prince George’s County, public streets typically require a minimum right-of-way width of 60 feet. While a single travel lane is generally 10-12 feet wide, the county often controls a 60-foot corridor to accommodate the lane, shoulders, drainage, and utility infrastructure. enCodePlus +2Right-of-Way (ROW): This is the total land owned or controlled by the county, not just the paved surface. Typical Standard: Subdivision regulations often require public streets to have a 60-foot right-of-way, as indicated in the Prince George’s County Code. Roadside Distances: Private structures, such as fences or buildings, must be set back from this right-of-way line, often requiring a 50-foot or more setback from the edge of the street line, as noted in the Prince George’s County Code. enCode is recommended to check specific subdivision plats or the County Department of Public Works and Transportation for exact measurements Prince George’s County 311 (PGC 311) allows residents to request tree trimming, pruning, or removal for trees located within the County right-of-way (usually near roads). Requests can be submitted 24/7 via the PGC 311 website, the mobile app, or by calling 311. The Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) handles these requests
