2026 Gubernatorial Primary Candidate Listings is set with the deadline to file has passed. Steny Hoyer is not running for office in 2026, after serving 45 years in Congress. Over 27 candidates have filed to run for Maryland 5th Congressional District, for the General and Primary Election in 2026.
Wala Blegay, formerly the Prince George’s County Council member for District 6 (elected 2022), was unanimously appointed as an At-Large Council member on January 5, 2026, filling the vacancy left by Calvin Hawkins. Following this appointment, she announced her campaign for Maryland’s 5th Congressional District.Wala Blegay recently had several meetings in District 9, to discuss raising electricity rates and proposed development in District 9. I didn’t attend the electricity rates meeting but Wala Blegay did state in 2027, people should prepare for rolling blackouts and continuing higher rates if the planned data centers are built. At the rural tier meeting, the two main concerns from the community were the proposed data centers, which everyone in attendance were against and the terrible road conditions. On the data centers, Wala Blegay, stated the county officials were considering two areas in District 9. One being at the Chalk Point Power Generating Plant and the second location is somewhere in District 9, near the Patuxent River but exact location she didn’t have. She said Prince George’s County has lost funding from the Federal Government and Maryland State and Data Centers are very profitable to the Counties. She said she would oppose any data centers in District 9.
On roads, Wala Blegay stated The District County Council are not involved with maintaining roads, that is the responsibility of the counties or state. Department of Public Works and Transportation and Maryland State Highway Administration. One resident brought up the proposed gravel pit in Malcolm, MD., next to Malcolm Elementary. If approved 250 more dump trucks would be traveling from the pit on Popular Hill Rd. to Malcolm Rd. into Prince George’s County on Horsehead Rd. to Brandywine Rd. to the Holsinger Processing Plant. That is in addition to dump trucks that travel on Horsehead Rd. to the Holsinger Pit on Covington Rd. in Charles County. Horsehead Rd is already one of the worse roads in the area along with Cross Road Trail Rd. I would also mention Baden Westwood Rd from Baden Elementary towards Westwood Rd, also Bald Eagle School Rd. is in poor condition after being had potholes filled year after year. Croom Rd. was milled about 10 years ago in large sections but due to the increased traffic over the years and also logging trucks using Rt (382) Croom Rd. instead of Rt (381) Brandywine Rd. & Aquasco Rd., it needs to be milled are resurfaced again.
Wala Blegay wanted to establish a committee to support agriculture in the area, support the farmers and the vineyards and winery owners. WaIa Blegay also expressed it would be good to come up with a name for the wineries. I advised her the wineries has a name, it is called, The Legacy Wine Trail. I advised her we also have a farmers market called, The Croom Community Farmers Market. A civic association called, GBACA – Greater Baden-Aquasco Citizens Association. Several ways for the community to connect by social media. The Facebook page for the community called, Brandywine, Maryland Facebook page, that I am the Administrator. We have a Nextdoor site called, Baden/Aquasco Nextdoor.com, which I am the founding member.
Also, at the meeting was April Brock, a community engagement liaison representatives for District 27B. Delegate Jeffrie Long Jr. Chandrai CJ Jackson-Saunders
